The Vancouver Farmers Market is a large vibrant farmers market located in downtown Vancouver, Washington. Our flagship market operates on Saturdays and Sundays March through October, attracting over 400,000 customers and 170 vendors each season. We also run two weekday markets during the summer on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons to serve working communities in Vancouver. Our mission is to create community by providing local farm products, original artisan creations and quality prepared foods. We value community, education, sustainability and growth.

Overview

The Vancouver Farmers Market is looking for an Operations Assistant to join our team for the upcoming market season. The ideal candidate will love farmers markets, local foods, farms and businesses, and love working with a diverse population, outdoors in all types of weather. This work will take place at the Downtown Vancouver Farmers Market on Saturdays and Sundays, with potential hours added June - August on Thursdays in East Vancouver. The Operations Assistant is responsible for the set-up, tear down, and smooth operation of the Vancouver Farmers Market and its related programs during the market season.

Compensation & Schedule

$16 per hour. This is a temporary, part time position.

Typical Schedule

  • March 20th - June 13th
    • Saturdays, 6am - 4pm
    • Sundays, 7am - 4pm
  • June 17th - August 26th
    • Thursdays, 8am - 3pm
    • Saturdays, 6am - 4pm
    • Sundays, 7am - 4pm
  • August 28th - October 31st
    • Saturdays, 6am - 4pm
    • Sundays, 7am - 4pm
  • November 6th - December 18th
    • Saturdays 6am - 4pm

Supervision

Primary direction and supervision is received from the Vancouver Farmers Market Managers, and most work is done in collaboration with them.

Job Responsibilities

  • Set-up and tear down market equipment, including but not limited to, 10' x 10' pop up tents, tent weights, tables, chairs, barricades, signs, trash and receptacles.
  • Provide assistance to vendors as needed during set up, helping to find spaces, and trouble shoot issues as needed.
  • Assist in overseeing the Information Booth and Market during hours of operation.
  • Assist in managing volunteers related to the Information Booth, Customer Counting, COVID-19 Education, and Food Access programs.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with market staff, market vendors, customers, community members and partner organizations.
  • Provide excellent and friendly customer service to market shoppers and vendors, answering general questions, educate customers about the market, local food and market programs, and assist with various needs that arise.
  • Assist in conflict resolution for issues that arise in the market with customers or vendors.
  • Operate credit card machine and distribute market tokens to customers.
  • Manage SNAP, SNAP Market Match, and Credit/Debit Tokens.
  • Sell Market merchandise.
  • Assist market management with seasonal staff as needed.

  • Enjoy working in a high paced customer service focused environment.
  • Enthusiastic advocate for local food, nutrition, health and the community of Clark County.
  • Knowledge of farmers markets preferred.
  • Management skills, experience working with volunteers/staff.
  • Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and ability to drive a pickup truck.
  • Education: minimum High School Degree, college experience preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Lifting and/or carrying of 20-40lb objects repetitively, especially during set up and tear down.
  • Frequent standing and walking.
  • Frequent bending, twisting and reaching.
